The translator, Gita Krishnankutty, I guess, has tried to do complete justice to the original and has almost succeeded. Yudhishtira is shown in a completely different light and to an extent, so is Draupadi. I guess this is what makes it a unique read, compared to the other versions of Mahabharatha. Moreover it was very interesting and I wanted to read it in one stretch. MT has portrayed the entire story unbiased from the so called superhuman abilities and morale that we are used to hearing right from our childhood about the characters in Mahabharata. Coming to the central character of this book, I always saw Bhima as a brute of a person wielding his mace and always on the look out for a fight I guess all of us did.

The story is well-written with elements of realism unlike the actual epic filled with extra-ordinary fables. In fact, it is not the first time that one literary work has been subjected to reinterpret or renarrate from the point of view of some other characters from the same novel.
There have been numerous re-tellings so ransamoozham, from the PoV of so many characters and yet, every time I read it I come away with a different feeling and a different understanding of the characters. Narrating the story from Bhima’s point of view, MT stripped off the divine powers from the characters and presented them as mortal human beings with emotions.
Between the eldest Yudhishtira, whose kingship is a focus and the warrior Arjuna, whose valour is a key element of the epic, is Bhima, who annihilated each of the Kauravas, but who is still largely a footnote in the epic. He is one of the most prolific and versatile writers in modern Malayalam literature.
Always destined to be second or take the “Second Turn” – “Randam Oozham” radnamoozham Malayalam – which incidentally gives the novel its title to his weak elder brother Yudhishtira in seniority and younger brother Arjuna in fame and popularity, Randamooozham is not given his due as the main architect of the Pandava victory over their cousins Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war. I have a greater urge to re-read certain portions of Mahabharata after reading this book. No trivia or quizzes yet. I got this book in a day and started reading at once. A very good transformation of the epic Mahabharata. While reading I was Bhima, I was feeling all the emotions he went through, the feeling of rejection, avoidance and I was travelling around all the place he went, through Hastinapura, Indraprastha, the forest, the battle field of Kurukshetra Mt sir has narrated the novel through the perspective of Bheeman and which has been a fresh experience for the readers because we all might have read books of Mahabaratha through Karna.

I regret that I couldn’t read this in Malayalam, the original language in which this book was written. Moreover it was very interesting and I wanted to read it in one stretch. The other reason I found it interesting was that the story is presented as a story of mortals perhaps with randamoozam special skillsbut without divine manifestations, and with some very interesting interpretations.
